Kids at airports: how to keep them busy

Published on by Izabella

Kids in tow while travelling has both its challenges and its rewards. Checking in and then getting through security is just the beginning. The real fun starts when you reach your gate and your flight isn't boarding for another half hour or longer. That's when the challenge starts and you have to keep the kids busy until it's time to board. Need some tips? Here are a few ideas to keep your kids active while you're waiting because the last thing you want to do is pull out the games you've reserved for the flight too early.

Pick-up some essentials at the airport shops

Many domestic and international airlines don't stock kid-friendly snacks beyond some cookies and pretzels so take advantage of the large shops and pick up some snack foods to keep them happy for the flight as well as upon arrival until you're able to reach your hotel or the city centre to grab something to eat. If you're travelling with younger ones, consider buying some milk as well.

Get them active & occupied

While some airports have designated areas where kids can run around play before boarding, this is a luxury often only afforded by major international airports. If there's no such area at your departure gate, play games with them like relay races or races or jumping games. The more tired they are, the better. Some airports also have art displays or activity packages for kids while they're waiting. Visit an info point to see what's available.

Go on a scavenger hunt

For older ones, consider sending them on a scavenger hunt with a camera and a list of things to find. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • rental car
  • exact same souvenir in 3 different shops
  • mini spoon
  • coffee
  • keychain with departure city name
  • mailbox
  • flight attendant
  • pilot
