Shanghai is just got a whole lot cooler. China is now home to Asia’s largest art museum, which is set to rival world-famous art institutes like New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art or Paris’ Musee d’Orsay.

The China Pavilion from the Beijing Expo has been transformed into a world-class art museum and is the largest in Asia. Opening an exhibition space twice the size of Buckingham Palace is sure to boost Shanghai as an art capital. The China Art Museum covers 166,000 square metres with a whopping 64,000 square metres of display space. An average visitor will need at least two hours to walk through the 27 exhibition walls without stopping.

The China Art Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time on October 1st, 2012 and currently has five simultaneous exhibitions. 1,400 Chinese pieces of artwork are on display but some exciting exhibitions are planned for the future including an Andy Warhol retrospective and a Vincent Van Gogh show.

Can you think of a better way for China to celebrate its national holiday than by unveiling its new art museum, bound to become one of the most popular sights to see in China.
