It's easy to forget what's in your own backyard sometimes. We're guilty as charged! You see a hot deal for a beach destination and the tickets are booked before you've had a chance to really look at the calendar. Have you taken the time to really see England though? The UK is so rich in sights, history... even beaches!

This summer, as the UK celebrates the Queen's Diamon Jubilee and the summer Olympics come to London, why not save some time to visit Heritage Britain? We promise it's a decision you won't regret! Where should you go? Let's take a look at 6 cities in England, characterised by their heritage and historical importance.

Bath

Spa city with Roman and Georgian roots, Bath is a great trip from London or Bristol. It is famous of course for its hot springs which have attracted the rich and famous for centuries because of their healing waters. Before you go it's nice to read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.

Carlisle

Not far from the Scottish border is Carlisle, a historical yet modern city in the famous Lake District. The Carlisle Cathedral, built in 1112, attracts many. The Carlisle Castle in the city centre is worth seeing as well. From here, it's easy to explore the surorunding area. Hadrian's Wall is nearby as well!

Chester

In the heart of Cheshire, Chester is known for its Roman ruins. Some parts of this city are 2,000 years old! Walk along the Groves, the city's waterfront promenage along River Dee and through the lovely Grosvenor Park, a 19th century Victorian park. Like the River Thames, it's popular to rent a row boat and spend a summer afternoon out on the water.

Oxford

University town through and through, Oxford is an easy weekend trip from London. It is the oldest university town in England. Everywhere you turn in the city centre are pretty old buildings, bicycles whizzing by and students filling every coffee shop. A visit to the Bodleian Library is a must, as is a walk around the Radcliffe Camera and the Hertford Bridge (also know as the Bridge of Sighs).

Stratford-upon-Avon

Known most famously as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford is a small English town on the River Avon in Warwickshire. You can't come here without checking out the local theatre scene. The Royal Shakespeare Company calls this place home. Shakespeare's home is a top spot, on Henley Street. As well, Ann Hathaaway's cottage before she married Shakespeare.

York

This city's history goes back before even the Roman's came to town. Known to have the best-preserved historical buildings in all of Europe, especially its cathedral. Not to miss is the 8th century York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, Clifford's Tower and the York Castle Museum.

Have you visited any of these British Heritage cities?
