Crazy consular requests

Published on by Izabella

The United Kingdom has embassies and consulates all over the world. They're there to help Brits abroad in serious situations as well as to facilitate for foreigners who would like to travel or immigrate to Britain. Foreign Secretary William Hague recently revealed some of the most "ludicrous" requests that diplomats and consulate staff have received at UK consulates abroad. He pleads with the UK public to stop wasting consulate time and money by making ridiculous demands at their embassies abroad.

Just what are people asking the consulate staff to do for them?

Do NOT ask your consulate to...

  • Book you a restaurant while you're on holiday
  • Give you pest control advice if your holiday rental is infested with ants
  • Help you build a new chicken coop garden in Greece
  • Find your false teeth
  • Provide directions because your Sat-Nav is broken
  • Help you because you're unhappy with your recent plastic surgery
  • Give advice for jam that won't set
  • Hire you a dog minder for while you're away
  • Check on your live stock
  • Give weather advice
  • Toss a coin into Trevi fountain because you forgot and you want your marriage to succeed
  • Translate 'I Love You' into Hungarian, or any language for that matter

You're laughing (we know it!) because to us, these types of requests seem totally ridiculous. But in a moment, of panic, who else are you going to ask? To us it may seem like common sense but to others... well...

Let's just say that the next time you're on holiday, don't go ringing up the consulate the next time you can't track down your dentures!
