Airport security re-vamped!

Published on by Izabella

New technology at airport security means one things for passengers: shorter queues, quick inspections and less time at the airport. Now this is something to celebrate! New changes at security will also help airports make better use of technology, keeping the millions of passengers a little bit happier.

Presently, airports are given a quota of how many passengers per day need to take off their shoes, given a total search. The plan is to scrap that idea all together. Also passengers won't need to remove their laptop computers from their carry-on luggage. Airports with long security lines are also paying heavily for this as well since they have to pay airlines if security is so long their passengers can't get through and to their gates in time.

Is airport security "one size fits all?"

With shoe scanners, body scanners and passenger profiling, you can expect a lot of changes at British airports in the coming months and year. For more info on airport security at Britain's airports, refer to BAA.

5 tips for getting through airport security quickly

1. Dress appropriately. While it's nice to look good while flying, think simple. Ladies, keep the metal jewellery to a minimum and don't have anything in your pockets (keys, coins, mobile phones are a no-no). At the line, start to take off your watch, necklaces, belt, etc. while you're waiting so that when you get to the front you're practically ready to walk-through.

2. Have at the ready your boarding card, liquids bag (capacity must not exceed 1 litre, about 20cm x 20cm, or 8in x 8in) and laptop to be put through the security separate. You can keep your boarding pass in your hands while you pass through the scanner.

3. Once you arrive at the conveyor belt place your carry-on luggage onto the roller bed. Next grab a tray and since you have everything ready, put it all in. Your laptop will need to be placed in a separate tray.

4. Save about 2 minutes by skipping the belt. You'll have to take it off and put it back on. Best is to just avoid it altogether.

5. Forget about buying any liquids before security. Also, if you have a water bottle, make sure it's empty. You can fill it up again once you pass through security.

That's all there is to it. Don't forget to smile and wish the security team a nice day, say thank you. As you can imagine, their job is completely repetitive and it's sure they'll appreciate a nice "Thanks for doing a great job!" when you leave.
